What are the most common interview questions?

Preparing for a job interview can be nerve-wracking, especially if you don't know what to expect. While there are definitely some common tips around how to best prepare for interviews, and each interview is unique, there are several common interview questions that you can always make sure you prepare for.

In this article, we'll cover some of the most common interview questions and provide examples of jobs most likely to ask them.

"Tell me about yourself."

This is a classic interview question often used to break the ice and get to know the candidate. While it may seem easy, it can be challenging to answer succinctly without rambling on.

Example of a good answer: "I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Marketing and have been working in the industry for the past five years. As a Marketing Manager at XYZ Company, I've increased website traffic by 30% through targeted social media campaigns across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube primarily."

Most commonly used in interviews for: Marketing, Sales, Project Management, and Customer Service.

"What are your strengths and weaknesses?"

This question is designed to help the interviewer understand your self-awareness and ability to reflect on your personal qualities.

Example: "My greatest strength is my ability to communicate effectively with both colleagues and clients. On the other hand, my weakness is that I tend to get bogged down in details and can lose sight of the bigger picture."

Most commonly used in interviews for: Management, Sales, Finance, and Customer Service.

"Why do you want to work for this company?"

This question helps the interviewer understand your motivation and enthusiasm for the company and the role.

Example: "I've been following your company's success for some time, and I'm particularly impressed by your commitment to sustainability. My skills and experience align well with your company's values and mission."

Most commonly used in interviews for: Marketing, Sales, HR, and Management.

"What are your salary expectations?"

This question can be tricky to answer, as you don't want to undersell yourself, but you also don't want to price yourself out of the role.

Example: "I'm open to discussing salary, but my primary focus is finding a role that's a good fit for my skills and experience."

Most commonly used in interviews for: Finance, Sales, and Management.

"Do you have any questions for me?"

This question allows you to show your interest in the role and the company and clarify any questions you may have. You can read more about this in our specific article on asking great interview questions.

Example: "Can you tell me more about the company culture and how it supports employee growth and development?"

Most commonly used in interviews for: All job types.

These are just a few of the most common interview questions you can expect to encounter in a job interview. While it's impossible to predict every question, you'll be asked, preparing for these common questions can help you feel more confident and prepared for the day. Good luck!
