How to answer the "Why should we hire you?" question in a job interview

When you're in a job interview, one question that will likely arise is, "Why should we hire you?"


This is a great opportunity to showcase your skills, experience, and personality and convince the interviewer that you're the best candidate for the job.


To answer this question effectively, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

  1. Be specific: Avoid generic answers like "I'm a hard worker" or "I'm a team player." Instead, give specific examples of how your skills and experience make you the ideal candidate.

  2. Highlight your achievements: Use data and metrics to demonstrate your achievements in previous roles. For example, if you increased sales at your previous company, mention the percentage increase and how you achieved it.

  3. Show your passion: Demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role and the company. Explain why you're excited about the opportunity and what you can bring to the team.

  4. Don't badmouth others: Avoid criticising other candidates or your previous employer. This will reflect badly on you and could put off the interviewer.

  5. Be honest: Don't exaggerate your skills or experience. It's better to be honest about your strengths and weaknesses and explain how you're working to improve them.

Here are some examples of what to say and what not to say when answering the "Why should we hire you?" question:


What not to say:

"I'm the best candidate for the job because I'm better than all the other candidates."

"I need this job because I'm struggling to find work elsewhere."


What to say:

"I believe my experience in X and Y make me an ideal fit for this role, and I'm excited to apply my skills to help the team achieve its goals."

"In my previous role, I achieved a 20% increase in sales, and I believe my sales and customer service skills would be a valuable asset to your company."

"I'm passionate about the work your company does in the field of X, and I'm excited about the opportunity to contribute to that work and learn from your team."



The best approach to stand out from other candidates is to be specific, passionate, and honest about your skills and experience. Use data and metrics to demonstrate your achievements and enthusiasm for the role and the company.


Doing so gives the interviewer a clear picture of how you can contribute to the team and why you're the best candidate for the job.
